Theatre for Young Audience Creative Director/

Associate | Improv Playhouse

Kat is thrilled to announce that she was offered (and accepted) the Theatre for Young Audiences Creative Director/Creative Associate position with Improv Playhouse located just outside of Chicago, IL (in Libertyville.) Alongside administrative work and networking with regional partners, this position will provide the opportunity to direct, devise, perform in, and facilitate auditions for touring children’s theatre productions across Chicagoland. She will also be given the opportunity to teach older and younger folks through Improv Playhouse’s various training programs. She will dabble in supporting improv, standup, new works, and more - too! Elated is an understatement! She officially starts May 3rd, 2021.

Memoir Theatre Class w/Wendy Hammond

Kat will partake in a memoir theatre class presented by Chicago Dramatists and taught by accredited playwright, Wendy Hammond. The weekly class begins May 1st, 2020 and ends June 12th, 2020.

Bar None | Assistant Director

Kat will assistant direct PlayZoomers’ live and virtual production of Bar None by Barry Weinberg, directed by Richard Van Slyke. The short play will go up on July 23rd and 24th, Tickets can be found on eventbrite!

Me and Mrs. Cheverly | Assistant Director

Kat is assistant directing PlayZoomers’ live and virtual production of Me and Mrs. Cheverly by Ernie Joselovitz, directed by Mary Ann Nichols Hubbard. The play is to be performed April 23rd and April 24th, 2021. Tickets can be found on eventbrite!

Directing Workshop w/Joanie Schultz

Kat was accepted into and partook in the class titled Everything but Rehearsal: A Workshop in Directing Preparation in collaboration with Steep Theatre Company in October/November of 2020. This 6 week long, 8-person virtual class was taught by Joanie Schultz. Kat absolutely loved it and was so grateful to learn from one of her role models!

At the Battlefront (s/r) | Director

Kat had the privilege of directing the virtual staged reading of At the Battlefront by Gursimrat Kaur for Wild Imaginings’ Epiphanies New Works Festival in October of 2020.

Kat moved to her dream city in September of 2020 with two of her best friends. She is so happy to be in such a cool city. She also chopped all of her hair off!

Pride for Black Lives | Soloist

Within Baylor University Theatre, Kat performed as a soloist in the student produced cabaret titled Pride for Black Lives. The virtual performance was meant to showcase queer students and went up in June of 2020. Proceeds that were raised were donated to Color of Change, the nations largest online racial justice organization


Graduation!

Kat graduated in May of 2020 from Baylor University with a Bachelor of Fine Art in Theatre Performance alongside a Musical Theatre Concentration and Emphasis in Directing. Woohoo!

Hay Fever | Judith Bliss

Being her last show in college, Kat was cast as Judith Bliss for Baylor University Theatre’s main stage production of Hay Fever. The April production was tragically cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The show will always remain dear to her heart.

Kat played the role of Dolores in February of 2020 as a part of Baylor Theatre’s main stage production of Yerma.

The Labyrinth | Director (s/r)

Kat Phillips had the joy of directing the premiere of a hilarious 10-minute play written by Caroline Munsell. The Labyrinth went up in Baylor University Theatre’s Workshop on January 24th, 2020.

5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche | Director

Kat had the joy of directing 5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche by Andrew Hobgood and Evan Linder as her capstone for Baylor Theatre’s Advanced Directing class. The show went up on Monday, December 16th, 2019, in Theate 11 at Baylor University.

Kat played Liz in a scene from Theresa’s Rebeck’s play., Loose Knit, directed by Daniel Merry. The scene went up in Baylor Theatre's Workshop on November 15th, 2019.


Little Women

Little Women (s/f) | Director & Music Director

For her senior level advanced directing class, Kat directed and music directed the last third of the musical Little Women for Baylor University Theatre’s Workshop. The piece when up November 8th, 2019, in Theatre 11 at Baylor University.


Trunchbull, Matilda

Matilda | Trunchbull

Kat had the joy of playing Agatha Trunchbull in Baylor Theatre’s main stage production of Matilda the musical. The show ran October 2nd - 6th, 2019 and October 9th - 13th, 2019.

BURNING: A Devised Postmodern Piece | Director & Deviser

For her senior-level advanced directing class, Kat was given the word “fire” in order to create a 10-15 minute completely original, devised, postmodern piece of theatre. This process was incredibly reliant on her collaboration with her cast of 8 and 2 designers. The product deeply affected audience members on an emotional level. This wonderful impact stemmed from Kat’s focus on empathy, music, movement, and color within the piece.. The piece went up on Friday, September 20th, 2019, in Theatre 11 at Baylor Univeristy.

Chicago Children’s Theatre | Education & Teaching Artist Apprentice

From June 21st - August 16th, 2019, Kat served as an Education and Teaching Artist Apprentice for Chicago Children’s Theatre. Kat centered her summer in Chicago around this internship and found much artistic and personal growth when given the opportunity to write, teach, and direct. She definitely found a new passion for teaching young, brilliant voices!

Vanities (s/f) | Director

Kat had the privilege of directing Meredith Marcum, Delaney Wanger, and Bethany Johnson in a scene from Vanities by Jack Heifner. The piece was performed in Baylor Theatre's Workshop on April 19th, 2019.

ARE YOU READY TO GET PAMPERED!? (s/r)
| Co-Director

Kat co-directed a staged reading of ARE YOU READY TO GET PAMPERED!? by Catherine Weingarten alongside her peer and dear friend, Alissa Klusky. The cast truly had a blast putting such a hilarious, relevant piece revolving around a super girly summer camp ;). The piece went up in Baylor Theartre on March 31st, 2019.

WE.WOMEN. | Ensemble & Deviser

Led and directed by Baylor grad Kelsey Leigh Ervi, Kat and seven other women in Baylor Theatre devised, wrote, and explored a piece regarding the joys and sorrows of womanhood. WE.WOMEN. was performed on March 1st, 2019 , in Baylor Theatre’s workshop and had a wonderfully profound effect on the department and beyonf. Kat is so thankful to have had the chance to collaborate with such an incredible group of women.
